Digital Nomad Visa: The luxury of working remotely

In 2023 Spain implemented a new type of visa called Digital Nomad Visa, ideal for those who, thanks to technology, can work remotely from anywhere in the world while legally residing in the country, plus also can benefit from this Visa the applicant’s married or unmarried partner and any dependent children and dependent relatives in the ascending line who form part of the family unit.

This type of visa responds to the growing global trend of workers who prefer to combine their professional career with the experience of living in different countries, without the restrictions of a traditional job in a fixed office.

So, what are the requirements to apply for this Visa?

The required documents for the worker and their family members are:

·         Visa related documents

·         Employment requirements

·         Financial requirements

·         Professional qualifications

Visa related documents:

IMPORTANT NOTE: Before applying for the visa the applicant must obtain an NIE number

1. National Visa application form.

2. A recent passport-size photograph.

3. A valid passport. Original and a photocopy.

4. A covering letter in Spanish explaining the reason of the application.

5. Criminal record certificate.

6. Proof of residence in the consular district. The applicant must provide proof of his/her legal residence in the district where the consulate is located.

7. Document proving a health insurance.

Employment requirements:

The applicant must submit also the following documents:

1. Certification of working for at least 3 months (before the visa application) for a foreign Company.

2. The existence of a real and continuous activity for at least one year of the company.

3. Documentation proving that the employment or professional relationship can be carried out remotely.

4. In the case of an employment relationship, the existence of the relationship between the worker and the company.

Financial requirements:

It is essential to prove that you have sufficient financial resources to reside in Spain, that is, at least 200% of the Interprofessional Minimum Wage (SMI). For the year 2025, the SMI was set at 16,576€ annual, so an essential requirement to apply for the digital nomad visa in Spain is to prove that you earn more than 33,152€ per year.

In the event that the person applying for the digital nomad visa for Spain wants to come with his or her family, the previous limit of the financial requirements will be increased by at least 75% of the SMI for the first person regrouped and at least 25% of the SMI for each additional member.

Therefore, if you want to work remotely in Spain with your partner and a child, in the end you must prove total income that accumulates 3 times the SMI limit, that is, an amount of 49,728€ a year.

Professional qualifications:

• Copy of the University degree or professional certificate proving your professional qualification.

• Failing the above, a document proving that the applicant has at least 3 years of experience in his/her business activity.

• Employment history issued by the origin government is also accepted.
