Golden Visa: Countdown

If you are lucky to have the necessary funds to apply for the Golden Visa, you are still in time, but don’t rest on your laurels and do it soon, because it will end on 3rd April 2025.

Spain implemented the Golden Visa in 2013 to help entrepreneurs and internalisation, however the country decided to conclude the scheme following concerns about its impact on housing prices and aligns with efforts to prioritise housing affordability.

These are the benefits of having a Golden Visa:

·   It grants you entry into the EU (Schengen area).

·   You can apply for the same permit for your spouse or partner, minor children or of legal age, whom -financially depend on you, including also dependants in the ascending line.

·   You only have to visit Spain once a year in order to maintain the permit, and even then staying for extended periods is not necessary.

·   The first residence permit for investors is valid for 3 years. Once that period has expired, non-EU investors who are interested in residing in Spain for a longer period may apply for renewal of the residence permit for successive 5-year periods, as long as the conditions are maintained.

·   After five years it is possible to gain permanent residency and after ten years citizenship.

So, how do I apply for one?

You have different ways to invest in Spain and obtain the Golden Visa:

1. Investment in property. This is the most typical: Basically you need to purchase a property worth 500.000€ or more. If you choose this one you will need to provide the certificate of domains and charges from the Land Registry and the deeds of the properties acquired.

2. Invest in Spanish shares or stocks: I you choose this investment, you will be required to present the Declaration of investment made at the Foreign Investments Registry of the Ministry of Economic or the Certificate from the financial intermediary registered at the National Securities Market Commission (CNMV) or at Banco de España, accrediting that the interested party has made the investment.

3. Invest in public debt: If you choose this one, you will be required to present a Certificate from the financial entity or from Banco de España accrediting that the applicant is the sole owner of the investment for a period equal to or exceeding 5 years.

4. Invest in bank deposits: With this investment you will be required to present a bank certificate indicating that the applicant is the sole owner of the investment.

Once you decided what type of investment you would like to do, you will be required to present the following documents, a part from the ones mentioned above.

Documents to present to apply for the Golden Visa:

1.       The documents accrediting the investment explained above.

2.       The National Visa Application form.

3.       A passport size photograph.

4.       Valid, unexpired passport.

5.       Financial means. Original and a copy of the documents proving sufficient own financial means, or accrediting a regular source of income for the investor and, where applicable, for the family members accompanying them.

6.       Criminal record check certificate.

7.       Health insurance. Original and a copy of the certificate accrediting the public or private health insurance contracted with an insurance entity authorized to operate in Spain.

8.       Proof of residence in the consular district.

9.       Proof of the representative's identity and capacity. If the visa application is submitted through a representative, a copy of the identity document or passport of the representative and of the power of attorney or document accrediting representation must be submitted.

10.   Payment of the visa fee.

a. Adult: £74.65

b. Children 6 to 12 years old: £37.35

c. Children 5 years old or younger: £0
